About Luiz Gubeissi - Gubass
Luiz Gubeissi is a Brazilian-born double bass player and dedicated improviser whose artistic path is rooted in deep listening, risk-taking, and real-time creation. Beginning his musical studies on piano as a child, he took up the bass at 15 and later gravitated toward the double bass at 23, where he found his primary voice. Early studies in harmony, jazz, and Brazilian music laid a strong foundation, but it was free improvisation that ultimately became central to his practice.
Since 2004, Luiz has been an active presence in the free improvisation community. He was a foundational member of the Abaetetuba Collective, a São Paulo–based ensemble dedicated to spontaneous creation and exploratory sound practice. Through performances and recordings with the collective, he collaborated with a wide range of international improvisers, helping shape a vibrant experimental scene grounded in dialogue and sonic openness.
In 2014, Luiz relocated to Australia, where he became an active contributor to the local improvisation and experimental music community, joining the Splinter Orchestra for 3 years among other projects. His work in Australia includes collaborations with leading figures in contemporary exploratory music, notably the violinist and instrument innovator Jon Rose. Their duo project resulted in the recording Honey Ants: New Music from Alice Springs, released by Thodol Records, a work celebrated for its textural depth and spontaneous interplay.
Luiz is also a participant in the Movement and Frequencies Project, an initiative focused on interdisciplinary exchange and experimental sound practices. His involvement reflects his ongoing commitment to collective research, collaboration, and expanding the language of improvised music beyond conventional boundaries.Luiz’s improvisational language draws from diverse experiences in rock, jazz, classical, and experimental contexts, yet remains centered on the acoustic presence of the double bass. His playing explores resonance, silence, gesture, and extended technique, always guided by attentive listening and interaction.
Whether performing solo or in ensemble settings, Luiz approaches each performance as a unique encounter — an unfolding conversation shaped by space, collaborators, and the immediacy of sound.
